Text from the first page

A matrix (plural - matrices) is a smart way of storing information,
especially that involving numbers. Consider the table below.

\begin{table}
\captionsetup{labelformat=empty}
\caption{SOCCER LEAGUE LOG}

Team  |  Won  |  Draw  |  Lost
A  |  3  |  1  |  1
B  |  1  |  2  |  2
C  |  0  |  2  |  3

\end{table}

The numbers show a team performance and can be written in matrix form as

Features of a matrix are:
1. the members (elements) are written in rows and columns.
2. the members (elements) are always enclosed in brackets.

By the end of this chapter, students should be able to:
$\sqrt{1}$ use and interpret a matrix as a store of information.
2 use the idea of order of a matrix in operations.

3 multiply matrices with a scalar and/or with another matrix where possible.

4 find the determinant of any $2 \times 2$ matrix.

5 find and/or use the inverse of a $2 \times 2$ non-singular matrix.
