Q1
a) Explain the origin of upthrust. [2]
b) State Archimede's principle. [1]
c) A block of density $\mathbf{7 2 5 ~ k g} / \mathbf{m}^{3}$ floats face down in a fluid of density $\mathbf{1 2 0 0 ~ k g} / \mathbf{m}^{3}$.

The block has height $\boldsymbol{H}=\mathbf{6 . 0 ~ c m}$.
1. Determine the value of $h$. [3]
2. Justify the drop in outside pressure. [2]
3. If the block is held fully submerged and then released, what is the magnitude of its acceleration? [2]
d) An office window has dimensions $\mathbf{3 . 5 2 ~ m}$ by $\mathbf{2 . 1 1 ~ m}$. As a result of a storm, the outside air pressure drops to $\mathbf{0 . 9 6 ~ a t m}$, but inside the pressure is held at $\mathbf{1 . 0 ~ a t m}$.

What force acting on the window? [2]
\[
\text { [ } \mathbf{1 ~ a t m}=\mathbf{1 0 1 ~ k P a} \text { ] }
\]
e) A bag is dropped from a balloon that is $\mathbf{3 1 5} \mathbf{~ m}$ above the ground and rising at a velocity $\mathbf{1 1 . 5 ~ m} / \mathbf{s}$. For the bag, find
(a) the maximum height reached. [3]
(b) its position and velocity 5.0 s after it is released. [2]
(c) the time at which it hits the ground. [2]
