MINING AND PROCESSING OF MINERALS
- Mining is the extraction of rocks or mineral resources from the ground.
- There are 3 main methods of mining:
- Open cast / open pit / surface mining
- Underground / shaft mining
- Adit / drift mining
1. Open Cast / Open Pit / Surface Mining
- Is a method of extracting rocks or minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit.
- It is used to extract mineral resources that are situated less than 50 meters from the ground surface.
- The overburden is removed using large excavators and draglines.
- It is the method used to extract coal at Hwange and even asbestos in Zvishavane.

Advantages of Open-cast / surface mining
- Open-cast mining is generally less expensive than underground mining.
- It is considered safer than underground mining as it eliminates the risk of tunnel collapses and gas explosions.
- Allows for more efficient extraction of minerals, with better recovery rates.
