Chapter 9
THE SLAVE TRADE

Introduction
- A slave is a person who is owned by another person and his function in life will be to work for someone for no pay.
- If a slave was married, the family belonged to the master and family members could be sold to different masters.
- It can therefore be said with certainty that a slave virtually had no rights.
- He or she was a commodity (goods to be bought or sold.)
- In Africa, slave trade was started by the Muslims, around the Indian Ocean, who bought slaves in East Africa and sold them in Asia and as far as China.
- The Atlantic slave trade was begun by the Portuguese missionaries by the 1440 s.

1- Portugal

Factors that Led to the Rise of Slave Trade
Mineral Discovery in the New World.
- Huge gold deposits were discovered in Spanish Puerto Rico and other parts of the New World as early as before 1530 .
- Such minerals were heavily demanded in the European Industries. As more mines were opened up, so the demand for slaves increased.
- An acute problem of labour supply arose because the indigenous people proved unequal to the tasks required of them and their population began to decline sharply.
