Settlement Studies
\& A settlement is a place where people live.
- It is also defined as a collection of dwellings where people live.
- A settlement could be anything from an isolated hamlet to mega city with over 10 million people.
- Settlements can either be temporary or permanent.
- Temporary settlements include refugee camps.
* Site is the actual place where a settlement is located.
- It is the land upon which a settlement is built e.g a settlement on a valley.
- Situation is the location of a settlement in relation to its surroundings e.g. near a river, surrounded by mountains.
- It is the location of a settlement in relation to surrounding human and physical features.
- It is described by the word near e-g. A settlement is found near a railway line.
$ Urban sprawl this is when two or more towns grow into each other.
- The result of an urban sprawl is called a conurbation.
* Sphere of influence is the area around the settlement which depends on the town for various services.
- The sphere of influence can be determined by length of the journey between home and workplace of the settlement's workplaces or the extent of the services for example newspaper distribution.
- Each settlement has a sphere of influence.
- Settlements can grow from being hamlets, to villages, then to towns, to cities or even larger settlements known as conurbations or megalopolis
- As the village grows in size the range of activities within it increases.
- In a town there is a shift to non-agricultural activities thus distinguishing it from a village
