ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
-are the effective and active measures geared towards the protection, conservation and preservation of the environment by a government, organisation or individual

NATURAL RESOURCES
-these are those naturally occurring things on or underneath the Earth's surface e.g minerals, soils etc

RENEWABLE RESOURCES
-these are those things that regenerate or replenish themselves to provide new supplies within a short space of time
-are those resources that can be used again and again without the fear of them being used up (infinite)
-some like trees, soils can be affected by human beings but others like wind, solar energy are not

NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES
-these are those things that are finite ,their exploitation can lead to their exhaustion e.g minerals like diamonds etc and coal, petroleum, natural gas(fossil fuels)
-these are those things that once used up will never again occur naturally in the environment
-therefore there is a great need to conserve or use them wisely e.g by recycling and use of substitutes

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
-this is the careful planned and controlled exploitation of resources so that they will always be present for the future generations
-it seeks to maintain a balance between the satisfaction of human needs and the preservation of the physical environment

POLLUTION / ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION
-this is the process of making the environment unhealthy or impure
-it is a large scale despoliation of the earth and its resources
-it is the presence of harmful substances in the environment
GLOBAL WARMING
-this is the increase in global temperatures as a result of increased release of greenhouse gases e.g carbon dioxide, methane, CFCs , etc into the atmosphere
